Upstate New York, Part 8: Major Attractions, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake
Lake Placid
Lake Placid is a small populated village that lies in the Adirondack Mountains. The Village of Lake Placid is nestled within the center of the Town of North Elba some miles southwest of Plattsburg. Lake Placid along with Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake together make up the Tri- Lakes region.
Lake Placid is home to winter- sports junkies and is also known as the two- time site of the Winter Olympics, once in 1932 and again in 1980.
For the winter- sports enthusiasts there is plenty of mountain powder to ski both Alpine and Nordic. Many people enjoy the mountain climbing and Lake Placid is well- known for being a base at which you can climb the some 46 peaks in the Adirondack Mountains. Subsequently those peaks when covered with fresh glistening snow make for the most enjoyable scenery in the world. And when the weather is warm Lake Placid contains one of the most notable and enjoyable stretches of fly fishing water, the west branch of the Ausable River. About 13 miles from Lake Placid sits Whiteface Mountain which offers hiking, gondola rides, skiing and mountain biking. And you must not forget to check out the golf course that was built back in 1898; the first golf course that called Lake Placid home. All this and Lake Placid in 2010 was dubbed by the U.S. news and World Report as being one of the “6 Forgotten Vacation Spots.”
Saranac Lake
Located just about seven miles from Lake Placid is the very beautiful and amazingly scenic Saranac Lake which was named the best small town in the New York State with a population of only about 5,000 people. One great attribute of this small town is it has some 186 buildings that are registered on the National Register of Historic Places that retain the look of the town’s founding era, which was around 1817.
Many tourists come to Saranac Lake in part because of the regions picturesque landscape and the villages amazing architecture. A lot of the village’s front is settled on Lake Flower which is a small lake that was created from a damn in Saranac Lake. All forms of boating can be enjoyed here, hiking, fishing, mountain climbing and there is an abundance of local shops and restaurants for tourists to utilize. During the winter months Saranac Lake is filled with a large amount of winter sport activities for visitors to tackle; snowboarding, skiing and ice fishing.
Saranac Lake also holds an annual one week long winter carnival and each year the carnival is put on and displayed in a different theme; 2011’s theme is medieval times. Every year however the carnivals main attraction is the Ice Palace, which is created from chunks of ice taken directly from Lake Flower and then illuminated with a rainbow of lights, along with other various activities and competitions.
So don’t count out upstate New York as a tourist or vacation destination and be sure to visit both Lake Placid and Saranac Lake when in the area.
