Vintage Style Bathroom

Odd but true the bathroom to me is sacred; it is a place where I can go to be alone with a hot bubble bath and dim lighting, plus peaceful quietness. I have spent the last year and a half decorating my bathroom to fit all my needs, relaxation, a sanctuary to reflect on the day’s happenings and beauty. I am a huge fan for all things vintage or old, and sense the bathroom was one of the rooms in the house that I had complete control over, I went nuts on the vintage look. I stuck with white, walls, flooring, towels and the silver for everything that would trim the space, soap dispenser, tooth brush holders and so on. I wanted a sleek and clean look, so not much adores the walls of my sanctuary, only a vintage chalk board and a vintage clock.

When looking to style your bathroom in the vintage look, the most important piece will be the bathtub. Depending on the individuals privacy threshold a claw foot tub can be placed into the bathroom with or without a rounded shower curtain. I prefer without, I think without a curtain gives my bathroom a more vintage look. The tub it's self will make all the difference to your vintage look, depending on the placement. Placing a claw foot tub in the middle of the floor (if there is room) is a vintage look in its self. In fact in the middle of the room always reminds me of one of those western movies, in which the cowboy is laying in the tub with feet up, totally naked, except the cowboy hat, so cool. However in a bathroom with limited space like mine above, placing the tub up against a wall is fine, loses the western vintage feel, however this placing leaves more room to vintage decorate around it.

So we have the tub, now we must think accesories, the sink, towels, soap dispensers and rugs can make all the difference in the world when creating a vintage look. Nautical vintage accesiories are very beautiful and easily found throughout the market. Consider a white wall paper with boat trimming, beautiful blue bathroom floor rugs and blue hand towels. Vintage looking wall art and small tin tubs to hold your wash clothes or bar soaps, all ideal for a vintage look. If your going for a sleek vintage look (my bathroom above) keep it simple by utlizing big objects like the claw foot tub and sink.

Since my bathroom space is limited, I placed the tub under the window sill, so to utilize the window sill like a shelf. I wanted no extra counter space or cupboard in the bathroom to hold the towels and other bathroom necessities. So a very old plain silver twirly top stool holds a few towels for easy access. The sink is vintage in its own right, just a sink no compartments underneath and really no space to hold soap or any dreaded clutter products. The sink legs are silver and sleek a very vintage look as well, pulling in the silver from the stool. All other towels and amenities sit in a closet in the hallway and are still just as easily accessible.

They look great! Even if I like the shiny and modern bathroon styles I would have to say that there is something interesting and unique about the bathrooms of yesterday.

Regards;)

Thank you, lilibees, for your well written, very interesting piece. I love your photos illustrating your creativity. I also decorate with vintage furniture and am loving my apartment. It was built in 1941 and is called "The Art Deco" building. My bath is not equipped, of course, with a clawfoot tub, but the architectural detail and the original floor and wall tiles add the vintage appeal I am drawn to. I used the high ceilings and accompaning wall space to place antique, tin art, advertising reproductions strategically high above the inside doorway. I have an antique perfume bottle and other small antique pharmacy bottles and tins. I do not want the dusty clutter that too many collectors end up with so I limit what I display and change it up occasionally. I completely enjoyed your creative ideas and thank you for sharing your charming and beautiful results.

I think going all white for a vintage bathroom was perfect. It's so clean and simple yet striking. The chrome accents highlight it nicely. Well done!

The retro bathroom is great. I can imagine enjoying many a bubble bath in that room.
