Upstate New York, Part 9: State Parks, Pixley Falls State Park

Pixley Falls State Park is located off NY Route 46 in Oneida Country, New York. Pixley Falls State Park makes up 375 acres of short hiking trails, fishing, and hunting, cross country skiing during the winter months and picnic opportunities during the warmer seasons. This beautiful state park gets its name from an amazingly beautiful waterfall that visitors can access from several short trails. The picturesque falls stands about 50 foot high with steep rolling wooded hills to its back and to its front the Black River provides a beautiful white water flowing stream.

A 2.7 mile long portion of the white water on Black River lies in Hawkinsville, New York it is great for white water rafting, paddlers and kayakers. Of course some of the stretches of white water are rigorous so check with park officials before venturing out.

For the campers out there, Pixley Falls State Park has plenty of pitch your own tent campground areas. And for the more modern camper wonderful rustic cabins with all the modern amenities are readily available. For those who choose to make their next camping trip to Pixley Falls and are looking for a bit more than your common camping entertainments, nearby villages may have just what you’re looking for. Boonville is a small quaint village that is situated in very close proximity to some of these camp grounds and provides bowling, miniature golf and some local restaurants. Utica, New York is also near portions of Pixley Falls State Park and the bigger village offers as wonderful animal zoo for all to enjoy, a large shopping district and plenty of local chow.

Some notable camping grounds to keep in mind if ever in the area include Stysh’s Brown Barn Campground’s and Kayuta Lake Campgrounds.

Stysh’s Brown Barn Campgrounds offers great opportunities for taking in the Pixley Falls scenery and all the activities that camping entails including fishing, swimming and campfires but still offering up some fun extras as well. The camping grounds itself is equipped with an arcade, an activities room containing ping pong tables and a miniature golf course. For the real outdoors type horseback riding, snowmobile renting and boating are all accessible to the campers.

Kayuta Lake Campgrounds also has all the creature comforts that most camping grounds include, like great views, clean restroom and office areas. Kayuta Lake Campgrounds like Stysh’s above has some extra’s as well. This campgrounds also sports an arcade facility, it is also in close distances to neighboring villages that offer local stores, places to dine and golf courses. Consider Kayuta Lake Campgrounds guided canoe rides down the Black River for an extra special memory.

Pixley Falls State Park like so many other state parks that can be visited in New York are packed loaded with beautiful landscapes, lakes, rivers, streams and plenty of fun activities to do.
