My Vegetable Choices For An Organic Garden

The following vegetables can be found in the organic section of your commonly found grocery stores, unfortunately they can be very expensive. Growing enough vegetables in an organic garden to feed you and your family can be an efficient and inexpensive financial move. The following are fairly easy to grow and require a few basic ingredients- nutrient –rich soil, water, drainage and sunlight, as well as protection from insects and pests. You might consider your companion plants that will enhance the well being of your crops.
Lettuce
Lettuce is easy to grow in an organic garden and it grows best with daytime temperatures that do not rise above 75 degrees and nighttime temperatures that do not fall below freezing. The great thing about lettuce is in the best scenarios you can get more than one harvest per season. The best species to plant in an organic garden are the black- seeded Simpson, oak leaf and red sails. The three mentioned species of lettuce do well planted in a garden with just about anything.
Carrots
Carrots to be planted in the Southern states should be done so early spring or late fall, and in the Northern regions in the summer time. Organically grown carrots do well if planted with beans, peas and onions for they make great companion plants. Carrots can be harvested young at about 3 to 4 inches in length or fully mature around 6 inches or more, both ways are great for eating. The best known organic carrot species to choose from are the little fingers, gold park and Nantes.
Beans
Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder are excellent choices for your organic garden and have been a garden favorite for years. Blue Lake is especially popular amongst gardens with little space due to the breed’s prolific nature. The Kentucky Blue is a hybrid of the later that has had some disease resistant qualities bred into it.
Peas
Peas are again a favorite found in gardens and has been for years. Peas can be planted and harvested in springtime and peas that are planted in a rich nutrient organic soil need no further fertilization. The Maestro is a perfect species for organic gardens because they a great disease resistant breed.
Tomato’s
Ever garden must have tomatoes, even though they are prone to a wide range of diseases and pests. However with the correct working organic soil tomatoes can yield a great harvest and save you tons of money on your grocery bill. All tomatoes really need is proper drainage, correct moisture, support for the leaves and stalk and a nutrient rich organic soil and any gardener can wreak the tomatoes benefits.
These vegetables above are just a few of the vegetable choices for my organic garden other vegetables that do well in an organic garden and amongst other vegetables are:
Onions, corn, cucumbers, spinach celery and cabbage including broccoli and cauliflower. You might also consider vegetables like beets, okra for warm climates and radishes. Fruits as well can make a wonderfully sensible addition to an organic garden consider strawberries which work well planted with beets and peppers or raspberries which help with weed control and can be planted with most vegetables.
Tips
For new organic gardeners start out small, grow just what you can consume.
Learn the ins and outs of composting. Being able to provide your garden with a good compost is key to a great harvest.
Research your crop choices making sure that they are grow-able for your climate and region.
Research each vegetables best companion plant this will delete a lot of problems.
Organic garden or not I recommend planting mint or spearmint herbs around your planting area this will naturally keep away insects.
