What To Eat To Help Promote Sleep

There are alot of reasons, and answers, even ideas on ways to promote a good nights sleep. Don't eat spicy food before bed, don't eat after a certain time at night before you go to sleep, I am sure you have heard all this and more before. So, what exactly can you eat that promotes restful nights sleep?

Foods containing a chemical called tryptophan, as well as rich levels of carbohydrates are foods that should be eaten if your having a hard time sleeping. Tryptophan is a chemical our bodies do not produce, however it is a chemical our bodies need. Tryptophan is an amino acid found in certain foods we eat. This mixed with foods high in carbohydrates, will help you sleep. See tryptophan helps are bodies produce another chemical called serotonin. Serotonin is what makes us feel sleepy, calm and relaxed all ingredients that are needed so we get the deep sleep our bodies require. Without serotonin our bodies would not feel tired enough, for us actually to fall into a deep, good nights sleep.

There are many foods that containing both tryptophan and rich levels are carbohydrates. Here are some examples of foods, and a few helpful snacks that can be eaten before bed, to help promote sleepiness. Peanuts, chickpeas, tuna, organic peanut butter, soy milk, and raw dairy products are a few. So try a peanut butter sandwich, or unsweetened cereal with soy milk as your next bed time snack.

I am sure their are those of you like me whom watch their weight, and maybe you don't feel comfortable enough to snack before bed. Try and fit foods with tryptophan and carbohydrates into your regular dinner time meal. Some dinner options could be, pasta and parmesiean cheese, turkey, or rice and miso soup.

There are many many different other foods not mentioned that contain tryptophan, you could consider researching and coming up with your own snack ideas or dinners. Some other great food ideas that may not contain tryptophan but are considered natural sleep aids you could try if you have a hard time sleeping. They are as follows:

  • Honey- honey contains high levels of glucose, glucose triggers your brain to stop producing a chemical called orexin. Orexin is the chemical naturally produced by the brain to keep us alert.
  • Almonds- almonds contain high levels of magnesium and magnesium acts as a natural muscle relaxer.
  • Oatmeal- not just a great choice for a healthy breakfast. Oatmeal contains melatonin, melatonin is a natural chemical that prepares ones body for rest.
  • Bananas- bananas contain a whole bunch of wonderful things, such as magnesium, melatonin, and serotonin, all which are natural supporters of sleep, and makes a person feel drowsy.

So eat up and sleep like a baby!

Cool - I'm a third shifter and believe me, keeping a rythmn of sleeping is difficult at times. I don't use sleep aides because I don't believe in using medications, so natural solutions are always best. Thanks for the suggestions. I will be sure to give them a try. Peace
